Summer Art Camp for Teens Registration Form

Learn to throw and handbuild pottery, draw, paint and more.
We start where you are and grow your skills toward where you want to go.
Serious art, serious fun! Weekly sessions June 16 – August 8.
Half day: 9 am-1pm (ceramics) or 12 noon-4 pm (painting/drawing) $135 members, $150 non-members
Full day: 9 am-4 pm $210 per week members, $235 non-members
Lunchtime chats with artists.
Mini sessions every week for digital photography, color, design & more.

Painting and Drawing Classes
Watercolor with Jane Ellithorpe
Wednesdays 10 am – 1 pm
Learn the values of colors, wet-on-wet, and wet brush on dry paper. Join the excitement! All skill levels are welcome. Materials not included. Students may purchase materials from instructor for $55. These will serve for several subsequent classes. Class fee $180, Members $165
Drawing with Jane Ellithorpe
Wednesdays 6:30 pm – 9 pm
Jane loves drawing with just paper and pencil. Learn to notice light and shadow. Then see the difference color makes in your highlights and shadows. All skill levels are welcome. Materials not included. Students may purchase materials from instructor for $50. These will serve for several subsequent classes. Class fee $180, Members $165
Life Drawing with Studio Host David Smith
Mondays 6:30 pm – 9 pm Adults please. No instructor. Fee $10 per visit. Year Round. Drawing or painting live models develops the awareness and skill to interpret the subtleties of the human figure.
Ceramics Studio Classes
Pottery Wheel – Throwing pottery on a wheel. Up to 25 lb. clay, all glazes and kiln firings included. Registration is limited to 8 students per class for pottery wheel classes.

Handbuilding Ceramics - Learn how to produce functional and sculptural ceramic forms using coil, pinch, and slab methods. Up to 25 lbs. of clay, glazes and kiln firings included. All skill levels.

Open Studio: Ceramics
Open Studio times are available for registered students to complete their class work. Free to registered students. Mon, Tue and Thu 1 pm – 5 pm, Wed 6 pm – 9 pm, Sat 9:30 am – 1 pm
Independent Study: Ceramics
Prefer to do your own thing without an instructor? Independent Study in Ceramics offers offers the use of wheel, handbuild and glazing areas and equipment when there is no class in session and during Open Studio times. Additional times available by appointment. You get a three-foot shelf to store your work. $125 per six week session concurrent with classes. Clay is $15 per 25 lb bag. Only Cone 6 clay compatible with our kilns may be used. Kiln firing charges apply: Whole kiln bisque: $30. Whole kiln glaze: $40. One shelf: $8. (Note that we do not have a gas kiln for high-temperature firing.) Signed rental agreement required.
Saturday Workshops
Hand Building Ceramics Workshop with Alyssa Wood
Saturday, June 21 from 2 to 4 pm Explore the versatility of slab construction—tiles, boxes, sculptures—almost anything you can imagine can be made from slabs of clay. This workshop is for all skill levels. Bring your own tools if you have them. We will have some to share for those who don’t. Adults only. $25 non-members, $20 members.
Alyssa Wood is Program Consultant to Creative Art Exchange. A working artist who specializes in handbuilt tiles, she holds an MFA from UNC-Chapel Hill. Recently, she was awarded a 2007 McKnight Foundation fellowship through the Northern Clay Center in Minneapolis, MN. She will exhibit her work as a member of the Alternate Images Group from June 2 – July 12 at Creative Art Exchange.

Slide Lecture: The Seven Ways of Color Contrast with Laura Smith
Saturday, June 21 from 1 to 2 pm. Whether you paint, throw, photograph or work in other media, understanding and utilizing color contrast is crucial to the success of many designs. Come for a walk through over 80 slides of luscious garden, greenway and forest scenes in photos along with fiber art examples. We will examine seven forms of color contrast for you to play with in your art: value, hue, intensity, temperature, successive, and simultaneous contrasts and contrast of extent. An added bonus is that the visual stimulation will feed your energy for your art.
Laura Smith is Executive Director of Creative Art Exchange and a fiber artist. She holds a Master Craftsman in Color from the Embroiderers’ Guild of America and currently chairs the program. Her website is: http://stitch4fun.com
